Three Tons of Fun … And Then Some has been extended at On Broadway until
Saturday 29 January 2005.
This time around Stella Magaba, Lillian Khumalo and Marguerita Freeks are accompanied by a live band, Octave, one of Cape Town’s hottest quartets. Celebrating smash hits as performed by Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight and Miriam Makeba, to name but a few. These three gifted songstresses take you straight back to the days of Motown and more – when music was music with a melody one could remember. This fabulous threesome are directed by Glenn Swart and choreographed by Christopher Kindo.

“The three buxom beauties are back – bigger than ever before, in fabulous costumes and with voices that can melt hearts from the moment they sing their very first note. If it’s fun you’re after then look no further than this show. The playlist is one of the best I have heard in a long time – concentrating not only on the number one hits … instead, they opted for a whole new repertorie of songs that introduces the audience to those hits that perhaps bubbled under the top ten or had the same bluesy rhythm, and because they have a live band backing them, the three sing them with their own special touches, with voice ranges that flabbergast. They don’t hold back, from the opening number right through to the audience’s guttural clamour for encores. I think everyone will agree that their finales and encores are the showstoppers – absolute jewels that will stay with the audiences for a long time after leaving On Broadway. They might be called 3 Tons of Fun but when, at the end of the show, the audience jumps to it’s feet to applaud and to sing and dance along to the not one, but two encores, it feels more like 17 Tons of Fun was had by all.
